If you are designing a loudspeaker from first principles, you would not create a loudspeaker that introduces a large number of early sound reflections and arrivals all delayed slighly (milliseconds) along with the desired signal and depend on your ear/brain to sort it out. You would also not design point source woofers that excite dozens of low frequency room modes which cause 30dB swings and infinite dips in room frequency response in multiple positions around a room.

In physics, one application of a quadrupole is to focus particle beams. In this acoustics application, a pair of dipoles on each side form a quadrupole intended to concentrate acoustic energy at the listener.
While arranging an arc of conventional direct radiator (cone) speakers do work slightly by marginally concentrating energy at the listener, they still retain their hemishperical radiation pattern and don’t solve floor, ceiling or side wall reflections.
In the Quadrupole speaker, the dipoles inherently cancel floor, ceiling, and sidewall reflections so sound energy is concentrated at the listener. The remaining reward sound energy is reflected around the room before it arrives at the listening position creating a time delay and reducing amplitude, even in rooms without any sound absorption at all! The enhanced detail and resoltuion is incredible.
